We -- The Responsible Citizens of India

by shellie @ Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 - 05:16:26

A 25-year old rather young female, working with a reputed MNC mobile service provider, who claims to be a well educated citizen of the country, well dressed in blue kurta and white pyajami wearing an expensive ESPIRIT watch on her left wrist and an expensive ray Ban sun glasses over her head is a master piece in herself.

This Delhi University graduate is so hygienic and disciplined that she ensures to keep herself, her belongings and her carry bag so clean that she does not mind throwing any unwanted tissue paper out of the bus she is travelling in.

I literally dug my nails into my palms when i saw this supposed-to-be responsible citizen of India liker her throwing away packet of biscuits outside the window of that mini bus that was carrying 25 passengers instead of its approved capacity of 18.

Flaunting a Nokia N70, this gentle lady is so nice to talk that you can hardly imagine that she could behave so irresponsibly.

My friends and acquaintances usually laugh at me when I stop them from littering on roads. Some of them say ' Arre yaar itna gand he sadak par thora meine phenk diya to kya farak pad jaega'. [cm'on yaar, there is already enough garbage on the roads, my minor littering won't make much of a difference]

I ask myself-- will it not make a difference if everyone starts thinking like him/her. Wouldn't there not be garbage everywhere on roads.

Other common excuses are 'Yaar meine to side par hi fenka he, kal safai hogi to saaf ho jaega' [I have thrown the garbage packet at the roadside, it will be removed the next day during the daily cleaning exercise.]

How can people even think in such a way. Do you litter your homes for the reason they will be cleaned the next day.

we all know how efficient is our Municipality department , then why don't we all become responsible and keep our surroundings clean.

It is so saddening when educated people like us behave so irresponsibly. I just wonder is this the way India become a developed country with its educated youth behaving so selfishly.

I am confused!!!! what should i praise first?

(I have tried to come out with right word around 6-7 times and then deleted bcz i didn't found it apt to describe my view..u can say limited knowledge of vocabulary or the word does not exist)

Finally, i have decided to praise the human in you first. I had been looking for good and responsible people like you around. tag is really impressive "i think a little wierd(1) wanna bring the revolution(1)".

I wont write much bcz .. again confused .. which direction should i catch..

But I should say you will definitely bring change in the society if you keep bombarding this kind of beautiful messages.

And second thing- Should I again go on to praise ur writing..

Yesssss.. it has flow to tie reader. You have very beautifully knitted words and phrases to have impact on readers mind...

at last I should inform you abt myself... i also try to avoid littering on the road but feel helpless when i don't find dustbin on the roadside.. finally i have to throw on roadside but i make sure that i am not the first one to have dirty the place.. ready for whips!!!

& a request: plz check para 3 line 2 + add 'h' to 10th word of para 5 line 2.

Is it Prasoon Srivastav?
In any case, Hi to you guys (you and Shelly).
I know Shelly for quite some time. When it comes to causes like this, she is a good Samaritan. In your comment you have written that at times you are forced to litter as you do not find a dustbin around, right? Do you know what Shelly does in similar situations? She carries the tissues, wrappers, etc. (those used by her only) with her until she finds a dustbin and then disposes them off. Got the hint? Try and find out a way to help yourself and others.

Lagey Raho Prasoon Bhai :-)

Okie Prasoon..
This is for you..A latest incident..

Yesterday while I was returning home from Elcomp, I was accompanied by my friend and his wife. We bought some wafers and soft drinks en route. As is the habit of an average Indian citizen, my friend's wife threw the empty wrapper out of the window of the car and this happened while I was over the phone with another friend of mine. I could do nothing but feel helpless. Just before the moment I was about to finish the call, i noticed my friend repeating the act this time and I shouted... Both of them were surprised and then he suddenly realised. Now what they wanted to know what would i do with the empty cans of cold drinks.. I told them that i will carry them home and throw them in the dustbin..

And you know what happened???

His wife told me -- Shelly do not worry, i will carry the cans with me and throw them in the dustbin when we reach home

ANd I thought--
Good i did it again..

Samjhe Bacha..

:-)

keep up the good work - at least a tissue will biodegrade. I was saddened on my return to India to see the massive increase in plastic refuse which doesnt rot or burn and kills the cows who eat it

plastic and urban waste is spoiling our environment. I recently went to Madikeri, supposed to be one of the most beautiful places and to see the small & sleepy town being plundered of its natural beauty...it is heart rending. Trees, you will not believe, almost 5-6foot broad trunks (guess the age now! atleast a few hundred years!) are cut on the roadside and carried in trucks...how can they do this? and plastics strewn all over the place. Yucky to see such inane behaviour. And one must visit the mysore brindavan gardens t see what I mean by plastic contamination...the whole lake is full of plastic cans of sprite, coca cola, pepsi and fanta. How come these companies are not fined for the pollution they cause. why not give the job of cleaning and keeping the lake clean given to them...responsibility comes with accountability and this way we can solve the problem. just my thoughts. keep up, Shellie for such nice topics.
